Sprewell Back to His Old Tricks

It's been almost 10 years since Latrell Sprewell choked Golden State Warriors head coach P.J. Carlesimo, which lead to a season long suspension for the former NBA player.

Oops he's did it again! This time to a woman he was having consensual sex with on his yaght. The victim reported to police that he choked her, she fought him off and then he drove her home.

Latrell we all forgave you and almost forgot about the incident with Carlesimo, it's been 10 long years!....thanks for the refresher!! (photo/hoopsvibe.com)

SPORTSRx presents: Meltdown of the Week Award

Every Thursday, SportsRx will pick a weekly event in sports that can be considered a true meltdown. Why Thursday? Cause that works for us!

The first weekly SportsRx Meltdown Award goes to.......The Cincinnati Reds for watching their playoff hopes flush down the toilet faster than....., well we'll leave it at that. This was a tough call for us because we have many friends who are die-hard Reds fans (sorry guys).

We could have given this to Yankee Third Baseman Alex Rodriguez, for his 2-20 with 14 K's on the recent west coast roadtrip but he's seen enough torture from the Yankee Fans, so we will go easy on him. Besides his .275-26-94 numbers don't lie and the Yanks are still a cool 8 games up on the Red Sox.

The Reds have lost 6 straight games on their west coast trip, three in a row to both the Giants and the Dodgers. They are now 4 1/2 games behind the Cardinals the NL Central and 1 1/2 games out of the playoffs all together. They head to San Diego on Friday to try and gain back the lead of the NL Wild Card and stop the bleeding.

To make things worse for the Reds, on Wednesday they acquired Jason Johnson, who's stellar performances this season with both the Indians and the Red Sox, have landed him on his third team this season, and fourth in two season. They signed him to a minor-league contract, but really wanted him for their playoff roster they said. "He's got a good arm, good stuff," Wayne Krivsky, Reds GM said. "He's a veteran guy. He adds to our depth, our inventory." (Cincinnati Enquirer). Playoff roster? The guy is 3-12 with stellar e.r.a. of 6.35! Unfortunately, if they think Johnson is a playoff type guy they want in their rotation or bullpen, even if they do make the playoffs it will be a quick exit for them this year.

The next three games in San Diego could pretty much make or break the Reds in 2006. One good note for the Reds, they have the night off.

VOLEK DONE WITH TITANS?

Billy Volek will waive his no-trade clause so that he can be traded to another team. Apparently his snaps have been reduced this week because of the acquisition of Kerry Collins this past Monday.

The reason? The rumor on the street is that he will not be the starter this season and quite possibly won't even make the roster for the Titans this year. Tennessee could trade him or release him outright, not have to worry about trading him to a team that may be strapped for cash and less willing to negotiate.

Our guess is that the Titans staff lacks confidence in Volek to be a leader for 1st round pick Vince Young. Kerri Collins has more NFL starts than Volek, has led the Panthers to the NFC Championship, and the Giants to the Super Bowl. Collins will not lead the Titans anywhere but to the golf course in January, however he may be a better fit to teach Young the ropes.

Volek threw for 2,305 yards in his first seven NFL starts with the Titans, far exceeding the most passing yards by any quarterback in NFL history.

Where could the Fresno State alum land? Who knows, but there is a market for back-up QB's out there for sure. Detroit? Cleveland? San Diego? Houston? Only time will tell. Maybe the Oakland Raiders should pick him up, he at least has some success to back up Aaron Brooks, oh wait, that's right, they signed JEFF GEORGE! (photo/SI)

Here We Go....

College Football will begin this evening. Are you ready? Is your spouse ready to miss you for the next 5 months while you sit in front of the television watching all the games, drinking beer and eating food that is horrible for you?

A few of the television matchups tonight will include Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks (left) at Mississippi State, Northwestern at Miami (OH) and Boston College at Central Michigan.

There is usually a Mid-American Conference (MAC) upset at the beginning of the season, or at least a heart attack scare by one of them every year. The SportsRx, MAC upset special?.......The University of Toledo Rockets will go to Ames, Iowa to battle Iowa State this evening and shock the Cyclones 35-31! (photo/sc.edu)

WILL CURTIS MARTIN RETIRE?

The writing is on the wall, he has been placed on the "Physically Unable To Perform" list by the New York Jets. In 2005, he had a career low in rushing attempts (220) rushing yards (735) and yards per carry (3.3).

The 33 year-old former Pittsburgh Panther, recently re-negotiated his contract to take the veteran league minimum, down from around 2.5 million a year.

If Martin does decide to retire, he will be the 4th leading rusher in NFL history behind Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, and Barry Sanders with 14,101 yards. (photo/AP)

HALL OF FAME!!!!!

40 years ago on this date, August 30, 1966, Pete Rose hit a home run from both sides of the plate for the Cincinnati Reds, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame period!!! His record of 4,256 hits will most likely never be broken. He won Rookie of the Year in 1963, Most Valuable Player in 1973 and finished runner-up for the 1968 MVP award behind Bob Gibson. He has a career average of .303.

Yes "Charlie Hustle" did bet on baseball almost 20 years ago and was convicted by Bartlett A. Giamatti with a lifetime banishment from the game, however, he has since admitted to his faults, served his time, and deserves a shot. His numbers don't lie, and if some of the players in the "steroid" era get elected for their juiced stats, then baseball will and has done a great injustice. It's up to Bud Selig to lift the ban, who is a great friend of the late Giamatti.

Ironically today in 1905 the man who Pete Rose broke his hit record, Ty Cobb, made his major league hitting debut with the Detroit Tigers (photo/si.com)

LEINART TO BE A DADDY

According to People Magazine Arizona Cardinals QB and first round pick Matt Leinhart (23) will be a father. The mother is Brynn Cameron (20), Junior USC Women's Basketball Player. She will be sitting out the 2006-2007 season.

"It's an exciting time in their life," says a source who knows both athletes. "They both have support from their families."

Regardless of the sex of this child, in 20 years we're sure we will be hearing this kids name in the sports headlines somewhere, no doubt about it.(photos/AP)

Does anyone care about the Poinsettia Bowl? Besides one sponsored by the San Diego County Credit Union? Do we have too many bowl games now, because it looks as if we have run out of sponsors to us. The Army Black Knights football team does and they only have to come up with 6 wins, that's right 6 to guarantee bowl eligibility!

"This was the best bowl for us, and we believe we have a great chance of being bowl-eligible," Army director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. "We have to come up with the wins, but we are guaranteed. It would just be fantastic. They all love coach Ross out there." (AP)

No kidding!!! You wouldn't smell a bowl game with 6 wins if you weren't guaranteed this one!

Don't get us wrong here, former Chargers Head Coach Bobby Ross has the ability turn the Army's program around, but what is up with college football guaranteeing ARMY a bowl with only 6 wins? Army was 0-11 two season ago before Bobby Ross took over. He has since doubled the programs wins in each of the past two seasons, winning two in his first season, four in his second.

We all know college football won't have a playoff because of the large payouts bowl games give their participating schools. However, how much entertainment value is in a bowl on December 19th and one featuring Army vs an 8th seeded Mountain West Team????!!!!! What's next Kent State (1-10) vs. Idaho (2-9)?

25 Years Ago Today

Today marks the 25th Anniversary, August 29, 1971 of Hank Aaron's feat of becoming the first player in the National LeagueL to hit 100 or more RBI's in each of his first 11 major league season.

Hank Aaron is undoubtedly the Home Run King with his 755 career HR's. Unfortunately some guy from the Giants, that has an enormous head is looking to break that record in the very near future. Will it happen......

Boston Slugger David Ortiz is getting his heart evaluated for a possible irregular heartbeat. He left the Red Sox on their road trip in Oakland.

We hope all goes well with Ortiz, he was having a monster year and was quite possibly going to get the MVP this year in the American League (.287, 47, 121). He won't join the Sox until his test results come back. (photo/Boston Globe)
T.O. hit the snooze button T.O. many times!!!!

Apparently Terrell Owens claims he overslept which caused him to miss his rehabilitation assignment and team meeting this past weekend, ultimately leading to his $9.500 fine. "I think everybody has overslept, you know, once or twice in their life," Owens told the AP. "It's not a big deal," he said. "It was not something I purposely tried to do. It's something that I will try to make more of an effort, a better effort, to get here on time. Other than that, it's really not a big issue."

Come on T.O. you didn't do it purposely??? You can surely come up with a better excuse than oversleeping? Your dog ate your playbook, your car wouldn't start? Your house was on fire?

Apparently, the Cowboys don't seem to care about him missing these meetings either. Jerry Jones was interviewed and said it's not ruining any relationships in the clubhouse. Well Jerry why don't you allow the rest of the Cowboys sleep in, show up late, and miss rehab assignments when they're hurt too. We're pretty sure that if this was Terry Glenn, or any other player on the roster for that matter, he would have used far more disipline and even given a possible pink slip.

We've got news for you, the alarm clock is over 200 hundred years old, and you might want to go out and get one. (photo/AP)

Cincinnati's golden boy has taken the field with no reservations... don't need to stay up for this one. Every facet of the Bengal's play is superior to Green Bay. In fact, we had a hard time watching. The only people in "The Jungle" with less dignity than Bret Favre were two cheese heads in the upper deck... Sorry guys, "WHO-DEY!?!".

Carson threw 9-14 for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns last night as the Bengals slam the Packers 48-17 in a snoozer. "I felt good, It feels like it's just football now." Carson told the AP. Can Carson take the Bengals back to the playoffs in '06?? (photo/oddjack.com)

WTF?? Jeff George!!!!

It appears that The Mullet is back. Jeff George has signed with the Oakland Raiders. WOW they must certainly be desperate if they are signing him. Who knows what his role will be on the Raiders who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo. I can't imagine them signing him for his leadership in the clubhouse, especially due to his past with the Falcons in the mid-90's and his outlandish behavior on the sidelines to then head coach June Jones, which led to his demise as a Falcon.

The AP reports "George hasn't played since 2001, when he was cut after two games with the Redskins. In his last two games with Washington, George had a quarterback rating of 34.6, completing 23 of 42 passes with three interceptions."

If most of us can remember back that far, Jeff George was the #1 overall draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 1990. Surely The Raider Nation will love this signing! Please explain to us why Al Davis is still the owner of this team???

Collins signs with Titans

It appears that The Tennessee Titans have signed unemployed quarterback Kerry Collins today. This undoubtedly puts the appearance that they aren't happy with their two potential starters Billy Volek and this years 1st Round Draft Pick Vince Young. While Collins hasn't put up horrible numbers over his career, he is only 66-79 as a starter (ESPN.com) and has thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of his last six seasons (ESPN.com). We would hardly call this a steal, after all Collins was contemplating retirement before signing this deal and at 33, he's no secret weapon, considering he's past his prime and has been on the Raiders for the past few years who have been dismal and that can't do much for his confidence.

Well, well, well, it appears that they should have held on to "Air" McNair for at least another year to mentor Vince Young now doesn't it? Look for Kerry and the Titans to have similar looks on their faces as the above picture of Collins had with the Giants. (photo/Newsday - David L. Pokress)

The Baltimore Orioles trade seasoned veteran Jeff
Conine to the Phillies yesterday. This will add a
much needed bat in the outfield for the Phils as they
try and earn a Wild Card Birth this season. Philly is
one game out of the Wild Card Lead behind struggling
Cincinnati, who has dropped their last three games.
Conine is hitting .265 with nine homers and 49 RBIs.
"It's a good opportunity for him to go on at the tail
end of his career. You don't have many opportunities
to go on and play in the playoffs." said Jim Duquette
the VP of Baseball Operations from Baltimore. No
kidding!!!! We thought the Orioles were going to make
the playoffs with their 59-71 record!!! Conine just
turned 40 this past June. Unfortunately he won't be
celebrating in October like he is here!
WTF?

Apparently in the "other" NBA the Detroit Shock routed
the The Sun 79-55 to earn their second chance at a
WNBA Title. They will be taking on defending champs
Sacramento this Wednesday. It fascinates SportsRx that
this league is still in existence, how could anybody
attend this awful "professional" sporting event? I
guess some people might like the possibilities of what
may go on in this picture...YIKES! (AP Photo/Jessica Hill)
old freak!
HAPPY B-DAY JULIO!!!

This past week Julio Franco turned 48 years old. We
must say that this is truly unreal....this man is a
freak! He's playing at the highest level of baseball
and he's forty freakin eight!! "Franco is the oldest
player in the major leagues since Minnie Minoso made a
two-game comeback with the Chicago White Sox in 1980
at age 57. He is batting .272 with one homer and 16
RBIs." We hope he plays until he's at least able to qualify for Social Security at age 62. (Photo/Kathy Willins - AP)

20 YEARS!!!!

We realize this has gotten tiresome, however, WHY NOT!!! Come on Barry, look at the contrast in head size here.
It's as obvious as John Madden's color commentary!
T.O.

The New "Mouth of the South" Terrell Owens is continuing
his antics with the Dallas Cowboys. According to
ESPN.com he's supposedly being fined $9,500 (which is
like $20 to him) because of a missed rehabilitation
appointment and didn't show up for an offensive
meeting this past weekend. (AP)

So far this year T.O. has "turned his hamstring injury
into an attention-getter by flying in specialists to
help him rehabilitate and wearing a cycling team
outfit one day while pedaling a stationary bicycle".(AP)
SportsRx isn't denying that he's hurt, but come on, how
many players have been in the NFL during the leagues'
existence who have played with far worse injuries than
this, oh what the old school players must think!

Finally what happened to the "new T.O." that he vowed
he would make the Cowboys not regret signing
him....seems like a man of his word if you ask us.

AHHHH can you imagine if T.O. would have only kept his
mouth shut during the past few years, I can only
imagine the amount of jack he would have right now in
endorsements, well but that's something he will have
to live with when he's 50 I guess!

Tiger Woods celebrated his 10-year anniversary of turning pro Sunday by winning for the 52nd time on the PGA Tour, making an 8-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole against Stewart Cink to win the Bridgestone Invitational. (AP: DOUG FERGUSON , 08.27.2006, 05:16 PM) ...for the fifth time!

Like it or not... Tiger is the best ever!
Where you at 85?

In a press conference last Friday, Marvin Lewis gave Carson Palmer the "Green Light" to start Sept. 1st in the final preseason match-up against the Edgerrin Jameless Indianapolis Colts. The Packers play at the Jungle Monday August 28th... WHO-DEY!
Farewell Andre!
