Tigers Continue Streak With Fourth Straight Playoff Victory
Barry Zito, a free agent possibly pitching for the last time in an A's uniform in Oakland, gave up a home run to Brandon Inge with two outs in the top of the third. From there the Detroit Tigers rolled on to whip the A's 5-1 before a crowd of 35,655, which constitutes a sellout at the reduced-size McAfee Coliseum.
"Inge hit a homer on a fastball, a good swing on a pretty good pitch," said Zito.
The A's had 14 base runners but hit into an ALCS-record four double plays and were shut out until the bottom of the eighth.
Game 2 will be tonight at 8:17pm. EST. The A's need to win game two badly, or they could be golfing by the weekend.
