Kenny Rogers Was Dealing, Tigers Take 3-0 Series Lead
Kenny Rogers became the first Tigers pitcher ever to make consecutive scoreless playoff starts. As the towel-waving sellout at Comerica Park frequently chanted his first name, Rogers went 7 2/3 innings, allowed two hits (one on the infield), and beat Oakland, 3-0. If it had been any colder, he might have thrown a no-hitter.
The Tigers gave Rogers a 2-0 lead in the first off Rich Harden — after Oakland had its only at-bat of the day off Rogers with a runner in scoring position. Craig Monroe homered in the fifth for the day’s final run.
If the Tigers win this series, they open the World Series at Comerica Park a week from tonight against the winner of the Mets-Cardinals NL championship series.
