How Deep Does The Michigan-Michigan State Rivalry Go?
This weekend will be the annual University of Michigan vs. Michigan State. We expected there to be some bad blood between each schools fans, but it apparently goes year around.
Six of seven Northwest High School football players who allegedly turned a Wolverine fan's yard Michigan State green will be charged with misdemeanors today. All seven must miss three football games, a move that ended the Mounties' junior varsity season.
Northwest Community Schools canceled the rest of the junior varsity football season because four of 18 players were involved. All seven players, including three on the varsity, were suspended from playing in the next three games.
"That's all they are going to get?" Ronald Jenkins, the steamed University of Michigan fan, said of the charges Monday. "I think I'll get an attorney." I am not going to accept such weak charges. They are getting off," Jenkins said of the Northwest High students, who are 15 to 18 years old.
Vandals struck Jenkins' property on Lansing Avenue early in the morning of July 23, spray-painting his UM yard decorations green and white.
Jenkins said he repainted all of the damaged items with three coats of maize and blue paint. He figures he invested $3,200 in supplies and time. He wants at least that much in restitution.
Since the vandalism story surfaced in August, various teens have honked as they passed his Blackman Township home and flipped him the finger, he said.
